Hi, friends! I’m sharing with you today what I’ve been reading lately: Girl, Wash Your Face and The Power of Heart.
I have been a lover of self-development books since I was young (like, thirteen-years-old young!). I feel like I gain so much, and often a new perspective after reading these books.
Some are certainly better than others, but we find that with all books, right?
I’ve had Girl, Wash Your Face on my reading list for a long time now. I happened to come across The Power of Heart while trying to pick out another book at the library, and I’m so happy I did!
I would highly recommend both of these books! Even if self-development books aren’t usually your jam, I think you’ll gain something from reading these.
Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
As I mentioned before, this one has been on my list for awhile. Something that stopped me from buying it was a lot of the Amazon reviews. Have you guys read those? SO many are negative!
While I’m not someone who completely relies on others’ opinions of something, it definitely made me question whether I should buy it or not.
I finally got a library card a couple of weeks ago, and decided it was worth giving the book the benefit of the doubt and seeing for myself if I liked it. I’m so happy I did!
I really enjoyed this book, friends. It takes you through 20 lies that you tell yourself and so many of them resonated with me.
Rachel is very down-to-earth and she just tells it like she sees it, and I respect her for that. I enjoyed and appreciated her honesty, as well as humor!
Religion sort of comes into play with this book in regards to the reviews. I noticed a lot of people said you needed to be religious to enjoy this book and others were claiming it wasn’t religious enough. Huh?
The author is a Christian, as am I. However, I can tell you that other than a few times that God is mentioned in this book – that’s really all and I didn’t see it as even possibly overbearing for those who aren’t religious. For those who thought it didn’t have enough of Christianity in it, truly, I don’t really see that it’s an issue here.
There’s so much to love about this book and she unapologetically says that she is a Christian. I just don’t think you have to make the book about religion, one way or another.
Just read it for what it is – an inspiring, motivating book about all of those negative (and false!) thoughts that pop into your mind that are keeping you from achieving your goals. Rachel is so good at making you want to leap from your chair and get started on those goals, and I think most of you will fall in love with this book!
If you want to check it out on Amazon, you can preview the book here. 🙂
The Power of Heart by Amy Bloch, M.D.
The title of this book stood out to me when I was thumbing through the new releases at the library. We often see so many self-development books focused on our brain, and how to silence all of those negative thoughts. Rarely do we see someone talking about the heart – especially from a psychiatrist!
Amy used to be all about the brain with her profession and that also carried into her personal life.
That is, until her daughter Emily was born. It changed her entire perspective.
Emily was born with brain damage and there are many things that she’s unable to do, however, Amy is convinced that what she is able to do is done by her heart!
It is really an eye-opening book and heart warming. It truly made me realize that the brain has so many limitations, but the heart does not. When we’ve thought through absolutely everything possible and can’t seem to find answers. Or when our brain tells us that we cannot do something that we are actually entirely capable of doing. It takes our hearts to keep pushing us towards what we really care about.
If you’d like to check it out, you can sneak a preview of the book here on Amazon. 🙂
Have you read either of these books? Let me know in the comments!
I am also praying for each of you to stay safe and healthy. It is a crazy time for all of us. We will get through this – remember, faith over fear.

Aww, thank you so much, Itzel!
You’ve inspired me to get out to a library (when it’s safe to do so again). I’ve never been a huge reader of self help books but more so because I never know where to start slash have an overbearingly excessive wishlist of titles I want/need to read.

Yay! I really wish I would have gone to my library sooner. They have so many great options! I can relate to that, I try to prioritize the ones I want to read the most, and that seems to help. 🙂
I’ve been meaning to check out Rachel Hollis’ book, too! I agree- just because she’s religious doesn’t mean her advice is solely for others who are religious. I’ve listened to her podcast a few times- she seems SUPER down to earth!
