This NYC native (and fellow blogger!) does not hold back in her debut as an author!
Her new book, which released on March 1st of this year, is all about her dating experiences in New York City. While we tend to hear the narrative, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ thrown around in the dating scene, Mariann is turning that right around.
In fact, the title of her book is Un-Hinged: What I Learned From Saying, “It’s You, It’s Not Me” in the NYC Dating Scene. She truly does a great job of explaining that it’s more than okay to know what you bring to the table, and not put it on yourself for someone not being your person or if their behavior isn’t respectful.
I have been a fan of Mariann’s blog, MARIANNYC, for a long time now. She is such a bright light and free spirit, and shares amazing content on her blog as well as her IG. When she released a post earlier this year that she had a book coming out, I was super excited and knew I had to pre-order it. It was totally worth it!
This is a super light, easy read. While I am a happily married woman, I really enjoyed hearing about Mariann’s experiences with the different men she met on the Hinge dating app. It’s not something I’ve ever experienced, and my area is a lot different as a gal from southern Ohio who has never seen New York in person. So it was fun to go through her two-year journey on the app!
Side note: There are some curse words in this book. I know that’s not abnormal and it’s not over the top by any means, but I just wanted to let all of you know in case you may be sensitive to those.
I’ll share the synopsis (straight from Amazon) below for you to check out, and if it’s something you’re interested in, you have a couple of options to purchase the book. You can buy it in paperback (like I did) or you can now buy the Kindle version! Heads up, there is also an upcoming audiobook later this year, if you want to hang on for that one! I know this would be so cool to hear in her own voice, retelling her story.
In Un-Hinged: What I Learned from Saying, “It’s You, It’s Not Me” in the NYC Dating Scene, Mariann Yip recounts her dating experiences from over a span of two years in New York City.
Written with the familiarity of Mariann telling her close girlfriends about her dates for the first time, each chapter presents a different suitor and dives into the lessons she learned. With each of the twelve men she discusses, she reveals the ups and downs of online dating, the realities of dating in a city like New York, and the personal development she experienced in her late twenties.
When it comes to dating, love exists and will come and go. It’s important to remember that finding love is a journey and takes patience and time. Your unique dating experience is valid, and the way your relationship ends does not define your worth or what you deserve. And, most importantly, you should never settle, because oftentimes, honey, it’s them―it’s not you.
If you have a free moment, her book has been nominated for TCK Publishing Reader’s Choice Awards! It’s super easy to vote! You can go to page six and scroll down to the fourth book from the very bottom and you’ll find Un-Hinged! It’s a one-time vote and I have no doubt Mariann will appreciate it so much!
That’s a wrap on my review of Un-Hinged, friends! I hope you enjoyed this quick post and that you’ll check out her book if it sounds like something you’d be interested in. 🙂
