Often times, life can feel overwhelming and as if you’re constantly moving at a fast pace.
It can be easy for our minds to become so consumed with staying ahead that we lose sight of what we currently have. It’s important to be mindful and stay present, and enjoy every moment life has to offer.
I put together four simple, easy ways to stay present that can help turn ordinary daily activities into something extra special.
Make a Cup of Your Favorite Beverage
Whether you’re working, heading to church, curling up with a good book or watching your favorite tv show – grabbing a cup of your favorite beverage can make your day a little extra special.
For me, I love a cup of coffee with my favorite creamer first thing in the morning. The caffeine gives me a much needed boost to take on the day. I also love a cup of hot cocoa sometimes in the evening when I’m curling up watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Anyone else watching this season?
TIP: If you’re also a coffee lover, invest in a good coffee pot and make your own at home! It’s quicker and cheaper than driving to your local Starbucks, and you can find so many great DIY recipes of your favorites on Pinterest. Let me know if you’d like to see some coffee DIY recipes on the blog!
Be Engaged
Wherever you may be or whatever you may be doing, be engaged with that place and activity. This requires our mind to focus on the task at hand, and to disregard any extra tabs that are open up there. 🙂
I know multi-tasking is very common, but it’s unfortunately not always the most effective. Giving your entire being to a task for a set amount of time is better than trying to juggle 82 things all at once.
TIP: Set a timer on your phone for a specific amount of time and solely work on one thing. Try this method and see if it helps you get things ticked off your to-do list more efficiently!
Dedicate an Amount of Time Just for You
I’m all about having a good morning routine and getting up before my husband does, but I know that not everyone is a morning person. Choose a time that works best for your schedule and do something you really enjoy.
Too often, we are so focused on taking care of others that we tend to forget that we need to take care of ourselves too. You cannot pour from an empty cup, my friend.
You deserve to have time for you, even if it’s just a half an hour to read a new book or to watch an episode of your favorite show. Whatever you choose, use this time to relax and recharge.
Practice Mindfulness Daily
When I was in college, I developed a habit of always looking ahead. When I wasn’t at school, I was at work and then it was home to sleep.
I was constantly thinking of what I needed to do next, and trying to juggle everything. When I first started dating my husband, I was in the midst of this work/school chaos. Then, I had three very important things to keep up with, as well as other things in life.
While this helped me graduate college, be successful at work, and have a good relationship – it also made me feel tired, overwhelmed and stressed out.
Try to stay mindful and center yourself in the present moment, and be thankful for all that you have. Notice the blooming flowers, how beautifully green the trees are, how cozy your cardigan is…literally anything that makes you realize that you can still have a good day even if you’d had some not-so-good moments in it.
TIP: Write down those moments in a journal, your planner, or on your phone, and even set reminders throughout the day with positive quotes or affirmations.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading some my easy ways to stay present. Life is so short and it’s up to each of us to make the most out of each day. I’m wishing you all the very best in your quest to stay present.
